You’re the band?

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Nightmare gig! Here’s the short version:

Show up at  the venue
and the owner seemed surprised to see us there. "I thought we didn’t
have any bands tonight," he says. We’re lucky that they were having a
meeting or they’d been closed.
Unload our gear, try to call the
promoter, who apparently is doing this for the first time. No answer,
so messages are left. We wait for the other bands. None show up. Owner
calls soundperson and bartenders to keep the bar open - I guess we have
to play now.
Call people to come out. Belinda calls a favor from another venue, Locals Only to send an opening act over. They do, so we owe them big time.
The show must go on. Gill
opens for us with an acoustic set. He’s looking to start a Bright
Eyes-type band, so if your interested, look him up. After him, we take
the stage and I mush out a mediocre performance. The rest of the band
kicked ass, so it evened out somewhat.
Thanks to Anni for riggin up the sound, the Ugly Monkey for staying open and letting us play, Gill for helping us out and
everyone who came out to see us. Hopefully the next one not be as
hectic, confusing and rock a lot more.
No thanks to the promoter/booking agent that couldn’t be reached, the bands that were scheduled who didn’t show up and the Indiana Pacers - because they had a game, I couldn’t find a decent parking spot!

the bunny holiday entry

Monday, April 17th, 2006

Aaaah Easter…. the holiday that involves rabbits delivering/hiding colorful eggs for children to find. What the hell were they smoking when they thought up this one?

Went up to Beth’s parents three days before easter for a short holiday getaway. Spent most of my time relaxing, fishing and watching TV. Actually got to watch Man Utd play live…too bad they didn’t get the job done. 0-0 draw with a team from the bottom of the table. WTF? Our only hope is that Chelsea mess up.

Spent Saturday in Warsaw wrapping up recording. We re-recorded "Ravine Soliloquy" (look it up) and I re-did the guitar intro to a new one - "The Animatronic". When the guys left to get dinner, I jammed with John, one of Joe’s musical cohorts, all of which was put on tape. It felt good to  just muck around with someone different for a little while. If/When Joe sends it to me, I may put em up on my Soundclick page for your listening pleasure.

I had to leave early cause I had to drive back to CP. I guess the other guys left right after I did. Belinda stayed and wrapped up the vocal tracks long after all of us left. She also stayed and helped Joe produce some rough mixes for us. Until 5am. On her birthday. That’s dedication. Guess we owe her a few BEvERageS (and maybe a DDR session?). At least Shayne and Aaron do (the DDR I mean).

Spent Sunday watching The Fifth Element, LOTR:The Two Towers and bits of Supertroopers. Had lamb roast for dinner and filled a gallon baggie full of chocolate and candy, which will probably be gone by Thursday. Drove home amidst tornado warnings and heavy rain. Top speed: 60 mph. No nasty incidents occured, not counting Foo peeing on my seat while I was getting fuel. So I live to write another entry… the end.

Courting Disaster is playing the Ugly Monkey on Wednesday. Show starts at 8.30. You know you want to be there…

Blackout

Saturday:
Wake up to drama. Make frantic phonecalls and then head to Purdue to watch Tina’s lacrosse match. More drama. No need for details, let’s just say that my advice for this week is: if you have a cellphone, leave it on and/or answer it so people can get to you when they need to! Especially if there’s no power and tornado warnings… Purdue won BTW.
Came home, intending to play some guitar but passed out instead (Boooring!). Wake up craving KFC. Damn you Colonel Sanders! You and your featherless chicken!
Set clocks forward. Damn you Daylight Savings Time!

Sunday:
FREE LUNCH at Boston Market! Thank you Daylight Savings Time! Beth and I narrowly avoid being attacked by some geese, who were apparently there for the free food too.
Practice went okay. Worked on new stuff. Didn’t get very far on lyrics for anything. Belinda wrote a new song, so we decide we’ll work on it later, since we weren’t being very productive. Decide to go bowling instead.
Went bowling at the smoke-filled, dingy but well-lit Sunset Bowl. True to form, I managed to not win any games or break 100 despite two strikes in the first two opening frames. TORNADO SIRENS SOUND but didn’t change my luck (lack of skill helped too!) Everyone wins a game but me. Beth and Belinda get one each, Taber won the last two.

TORNADO SIRENS again. We head to the clubhouse for some pool. Finally win at something. Head back to my place to work on her song. POWER GOES OUT. Decide to continue surrounded by candles on a coffincase. The POWER COMES ON.
Marc gets home with a couple people and starts to show his home video of his trip to TN. Duck into bedroom. Play a couple hands of Hold ‘Em. I suck at this too. Once the coast is clear, everyone heads home.

Another boring weekend in Indy passes by. Next week: DDR! I think it’s almost time to pull out the "old sports injury" excuse…

Tick tock

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

Everybody in Indy is going nuts over the time change. Today (April fools day!) we set all our clocks forward one hour. The rest of the States do it and now we finally have to follow, so I guess we’ll be on Eastern Time now. Or is it Central?

The NCAA Final Four is in Indy this weekend too. Lots of free concerts going on but I don’t feel like driving downtown, dealing with traffic (& people jaywalking), spending 20 minutes looking for parking and finally end up paying to park in an overpriced garage for Carrie Underwood and Hoobastank. Micheal Jackson maybe, but Hoobastoonk? No STANK-you (pun intended).
